Where Did We Go Wrong … or Did We?

Growing up in the 1960’s and 70’s was so different from the way things are in 2023. Despite the advantages of today’s technology, it is a time I wish many of the kids today could go back to. Perhaps it is just me growing old and sentimental, but it seemed much simpler when I was a kid. There were no organized play dates, we came home from school dropped our books, ran outside, and found our friends. Rules, for those games, were something that we created and there were no adults around to officiate. In our house, television viewing was very strictly regulated. On weekdays and weeknights there was no TV other than special events. For example, I got to watch the first landing and walk on the moon. Keep in mind that we had a lot fewer channels and other than some children’s programming on PBS, Captain Kangaroo, and Saturday morning cartoons there was nothing. Certainly, nothing like Nickelodeon or cartoon network.

  • Whether it is Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day, it is a Great Time to Learn, Reflect and Relax

Whether it is Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day, it is a Great Time to Learn, Reflect and Relax

Yesterday was Indigenous Peoples Day or Columbus Day depending on how you choose to label it. Regardless of what you call it, the day has become a hot button issue for some, a non-issue for others, and for many simply a Monday off in October. Let’s face it, this has never been a major holiday. Companies for years have considered Columbus Day (as it was known for many years) a floating holiday like President’s Day. Many businesses and colleges stay open, operating with a business-as-usual mentality. In some organizations, if you chose to work or had to work, later in the year you could take a day off of your choosing. Other institutions gave you either Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples Day or Presidents Day but not both.

  • Can Somebody Please Train People that Work in Call Centers

Can Somebody Please Train People that Work in Call Centers

Like many of you I get unsolicited calls every day trying to sell me something. Recently, I had one that will go down in the record books. My phone told me it was a SPAM Risk and still I picked up. How is it that this piece of electronics is so much smarter than I am? To be fair, on occasion it has labeled several of my client’s numbers as a SPAM Risk as well, so it is not infallible, this time it was spot on. So, I picked up the call, big mistake, 5 minutes, and 12 seconds of my life I will never get back.

    Help Us Help You

Fall semester is in full swing and that is both good and bad. It is great to be back on campuses with full compliments of students as opposed to the summer months when there are smaller numbers of students, faculty, and staff. Make no mistake, we love providing speakers and entertainment for orientations and working with Orientation Leaders and incoming first year students and staff, but here is a different energy when all the students come back. Often during orientations, first year students are a bit shy or perhaps reserved is a better term, as they take everything in and try to figure this “college” thing out. Energy levels ramp up when everyone is back. It is easy to both hear and see the excitement as friends reconnect after 3 months away, or even longer. Yes, it is fun being back.

  • A Weekend in Akron Ohio Was Just What I Needed

A Weekend in Akron Ohio Was Just What I Needed

It is also that time of year when conversations with clients are a bit longer and delve into deeper subject matter, as opposed to simply trying to provide and receive information about upcoming events. Recurring topics this summer were lingering challenges left behind by COVID, student engagement in general, the recruitment and the retention of student leaders, along with the lack of candidates to fill professional positions in student activities and residential life.

Over the last few months, we have begun to experiment with AI ChatGPT mostly, but we are also playing around with a Beta version of Photoshop AI as well. We took an old blog and ran it through ChatGPT to see what the results would be like. Below is the finished product. We have also added a link to the original blog at the end. Hopefully, you enjoy this.

  • Welcome Class of 2027

    Welcome Class of 2027

For 20 years (1998 to 2018) Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin produced the Mindset List. It is a compilation of factoids about the group of First Year students that would be entering the school that year. This list worked off the assumption that most of the students were 18 years old. Thought it would be fun to create a list for the Class of 2027. This is assuming that most were born in 2005.

It Must be Nice to be Williams Sonoma.

Rarely, in this blog do I refer to an organization or company by name. Often it is “this company or that company” but not today. Here is my sad tale of woe. Bear with me because this goes back to Christmas 2022.

    An Abundance of Riches

As mentioned earlier in terms of a retirement account or worldly possessions, I will never be on the Forbes list of the richest people in America. Having encountered some of those folks over the years, I am okay not being on that list.

Here Comes the Modern Version of the Used Car Salesman

For years, they were the butt of many jokes. Often portrayed in an unflattering light in movies and television shows. Frequently, they were shown dressed in hideous, ill-fitting clothes with a hairstyle that looked like they were cornering the greasy hair market. In the sales world, used car salesmen were viewed as the lowest of the low. Their sales pitch and banter is, or was, reminiscent of a string of bad pickup lines.
