Being Exceptional Isn’t All it is Cracked Up to Be
August 9th, 2021
Years ago, a friend of mine presented a session at conferences and for colleges called Being or Becoming an Exceptional Woman. I’m not 100% sure about the title but I used to joke with her that I wanted to do a presentation on being a mediocre man. Several people have commented that most men fit that description, so there is no need to present that educational opportunity.

On-Campus and Online: 4 Groups Who Need You to Persist with Hybrid Programming - by Amma Marfo
August 3rd, 2021
I won’t sugarcoat it. The circumstances that drove us to explore online programming in the first place were, and continue to be, pretty grim. We were driven online by an inherent lack of safety that made face to face untenable for many…and in some cases, continues in its unsafe nature. We made the move because we had to do so.

Stop using the phrases back to normal and new normal
July 26th, 2021
August 2nd, 2021 marks my return to the office on a regular basis for the first time since March of 2020. When I tell people this, they say “doesn’t it feel good to be getting back to normal?” Suddenly my eyes twitch, my fists clench uncontrollably, and my teeth start to clamp down on my tongue. It takes incredible self-control to not break into a full-blown comedian Lewis Black style rant. Please, stop using terms “new normal” or “next normal.” In fact, don’t put the word normal in there at all. THIS IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT, NORMAL!

Remember It may be their first or only!
July 20th, 2021
Years ago, at a conference, M. Kevin Fahey, a longtime Associate Director of Student Activities, and I were talking about the number of new professionals that were expressing that they were “burned out” after only a few years on the job. M. Kevin is not only a legend in the field, but he is a 30+ year professional with the enthusiasm of a fresh out of grad school twenty something. How does he do it?

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
July 12th, 2021
Ever since I was a kid, thank you notes have been a problem for me. My mother was an avid letter writer and thank you notes were always a priority for her. Regardless of the gift or gesture, small or large, you were almost always guaranteed to receive a beautiful handwritten note from her. Being born in 1930, she went to school at a time when they taught penmanship in school and her script was beautiful.

Some People Just Can’t Manage
June 28th, 2021
Lots of our blog posts lately have been somewhat heavy in subject and content. With a pandemic going on, how could they not be, but I was trying to keep things on the lighter side this week. It didn’t work as this topic kept gnawing at me and dragging me back in. It didn’t help that I ran into two newspaper articles talking about the number of people that have quit their jobs recently, and how there may be a mass exodus soon of other workers. Already industries are struggling to find help, so this does not bode well, for anyone.

Did Anything Good Come from the Coronavirus?
June 21st, 2021
For months this question has been asked in discussion groups, networking groups, bulletin boards, various chats, on social media, in offices, schools and social gatherings. For many, unless you own or work for Amazon, drive for Uber eats / Door Dash, or are named Dr. Anthony Fauci the answer would be an immediate and resounding no. But perhaps that answer is given a bit hastily, without proper reflection.

Getting back to the office may not be what you're expecting.
June 15th, 2021
Now that a lot of us have been, or are in the process of being, fully vaccinated, more and more people are getting back into the office. Recently, I started back 2 days a week after being home for over a year and it's incredibly different and, well, very weird.

Here Comes the Class of 2025
June 7th, 2021
June is graduation month for many high schools in the Northeast and New England. Several weeks ago in these very pages, we talked about the graduation experience in 2021. Even though many High School (and even a few College) graduations haven’t happened yet, it is time to focus our attention on the college class of 2025. There is a lot to think about and a lot to consider with this class. Not only with the students but their parents as well. For many students, Spring Semester 2021 marked a return to in person education, but it could hardly be looked at as a “normal or near normal” year.
