Where has all the service gone?
March 13th, 2023
All in one day, it all happened in one day. Actually, less than 24 hours and several interactions. I am talking about one of my favorite topics; service, or to be more precise, customer service. Early one morning, I opened an email from a friend, it was a short video shot in a new Amazon Go store. These stores have no cashiers and in the video that he sent me I didn’t see any staff of any kind. You simply scan the Amazon Go App on your phone, go through the store and take any items you want, then when you leave the store it automatically scans the items you have and charges whatever credit card you have in the app. To me it was a bit eerie.

Things Are Moving Forward and You Better Get on the Train
March 6th, 2023
There are times when it is interesting being one of the oldest people in the room. Few, if anyone else in the group at that NACA meeting would be considered a Baby Boomer. There was a good mix of millennials, Gen X, and a few Gen Z members as well, but I’m pretty sure I was the last of the boomers. Even more intriguing is when you are the senior citizen of the group, but you are embracing the change that is taking place. Rarely, if ever, do I advocate change for the sake of change, but when I see the world or at least an organization I have worked with for over 40 years, needing to change, I feel as if I must support that.

Do you need a business plan, or just effort and hard work?
February 27th, 2023
Education and teachable moments come in the strangest forms and often when you least expect them. We read papers or books, attend seminars, or listen to podcasts to get information and knowledge from people that may have expertise in fields we do not. These are cases where we are searching for knowledge on a certain subject. On occasion, there are times that take us by surprise, that educate us on things we haven’t been specifically looking for but that teach us all the same.

There is a lot to do on Campus
February 13th, 2023
“There is nothing to do on campus,” is a phrase that I am sick to death of hearing. Over the years, I have written about this very topic. Pointing out to parents that, at times, your kid tells you that they spent the weekend in their rooms doing nothing, instead of telling you what they really did.

Time Flies
February 13th, 2023
Later this week I will be heading to NACA LIVE, the reimagined NACA National Convention. NACA is the National Associations for Campus Activities. They are an association that brings staff and students, from colleges and universities around the country who plan student activities, together with vendors that supply talent, products, and services. It was 43 years ago when I walked into my very first NACA National Convention in Washington DC.

More random thoughts while traveling.
February 6th, 2023
My kids refer to my car, which is wrapped with FUN colors, photos, and logo, as the Clown Car. One of the good things about having a car that is wrapped is that it is easy to find in a parking lot. It is also easy to spot on the highway. Driving in Connecticut recently, there is a car pulling up next to me on I-91 and a person is looking over waving at me. It is a client and longtime friend heading back to New York. Bonus on this one, he was driving faster than I was. Those who know me will tell you that almost never happens.

Mean People Suck!
January 30th, 2023
Have you ever driven around and seen the bumper sticker Mean People Suck? It is one of those things that I never paid much attention to. Honestly, Captain Obvious or a 5-year-old should understand that mean people, in fact, do suck.

Customers versus Clients
January 23rd, 2023
For many people, the two words customers and clients are interchangeable but that is hardly the case. Customers engage in a transactional relationship with a business entity while a client is under the care and protection of that business. Confused? Don’t be, the distinction is very easy to explain.

Change is hard
January 16th, 2023
Most people don’t like change. Some handle it better than others, but for many it is uncomfortable. Whether it is a change at work or at home, often the reaction is the same discomfort. Perhaps I am not the right person to be addressing this, for most of my adult life I have lived in the same house (not the house I grew up in) and worked at the same company. Yet, I feel that my life, my job, and the world, are ever changing. Often, I go looking for ways to shake things up a bit, whether it is at home or how I do my job.

Not sure what to expect from 2023
January 9th, 2023
Very few years, in recent memory, bring with it as much uncertainty as 2023, for me. Even 2021, which was in the throes of the pandemic, had a bright outlook with the promise of a vaccine that would let all of us “return to normal.” After 2022, I am a lot less optimistic.
