    In Praise of Colleges

Recently, the Boston Globe ran an article with the headline “Colleges consider more restrictions as Omicron outbreaks increase but concerns about student mental health give pause.” Post-Thanksgiving outbreaks at Middlebury, Cornell and Princeton had caused the administrations to close their campuses and move the last week or two of classes and finals online. Shortly after this story broke, several schools cancelled athletic competitions or banned fans from the stands if the games were allowed to continue. All I could think of was here we go again.

Kids Really do Have the Spirit of Christmas.

The beard and wig don’t look so out of place now as when I began with the youthful face of a 16 year old. I’m 61 now and although less white needs to be applied to the eyebrows and there is plenty of natural padding these days, the excitement never wanes as I don the big red suit. Because for over 40 years, I have seen Christmas from a perspective that few people ever have. My view is from a big chair with kids all around me.

This has been a better holiday season

This year marks the second holiday season in a pandemic world. It is better than 2020, but still not great.

What is Wrong with People and Other Random Thoughts

We are about to start year three of this worldwide pandemic. For many, life has returned to something that resembles pre-COVID times, for others their world will never be the same. It is hard to find that proverbial silver lining with this virus that has caused so much death and destruction but, for a short period of time, it seemed to have brought out the best in people. Remember pictures and videos of people in Italy standing on balconies or hanging out of windows singing as a group to provide hope and keep a sense of community strong? Perhaps you are a healthcare worker that was applauded as you left your place of employ or had a parade of strangers drive by with signs of appreciation, honking horns and cheering for you as you went to your cars. Even for those of us with less heroic occupations, there were some things about the early stages of pandemic life that were better.

  • It Isn’t Just What You Say but How You Say It

It Isn’t Just What You Say but How You Say It

Sometimes we forget the impact our words can have. When I grew up, the prevailing sentiment was that sticks and stones can break my bones, but names will never hurt me. As my kids started school, the rule of thumb was that things were brought to the attention of the teacher only when they were dangerous or destructive, other things should be handled by the students themselves. Times, of course, have changed and right, wrong, or otherwise words absolutely matter. Recently, through three separate instances, I was reminded that it matters not only what we say but, how we say it.

  • Still Thankful

    Still Thankful

This was supposed to be easy. Just pen off a quick blog that reflects the time of year and the festivities of Thanksgiving. Could it be anymore simple? All that was needed was to acknowledge some of the people and things that I was thankful for, talk about turkey and some side dishes and boom we are done. Not so fast.

  • Thanks for the Email

    Thanks for the Email

Email is a fantastic tool and a great way to connect or keep in touch. It is also a colossal waste of time. Periodically, I go through both my emails and my junk folder just to see all the nonsense that people send me. I thought I would share bits and pieces with all of you.

    Struggling to stay relevant.

At times, my age is nothing more than the aches and pains one would expect from lifelong career that involves a lot of heavy lifting and shuffling of equipment, coupled with many, many miles on the road. At other times, it’s an ever widening gap between me and my clients.

    Programming Problems and Solutions

Way before the pandemic started, we were seeing a shift in how people program events. Please keep in mind that the brush I’m using here is a broad one and doesn’t apply everywhere, but the trends are commonplace, and the pandemic has compounded the issues. Here are a few that I have seen and as we come out of the pandemic, continue to see:

  • Happy Halloween

    Happy Halloween

It is that time of year. Summers warm lazy nights have been replaced by the colder, harsher temperatures. Warm breezes that rustled trees full of green leaves are a memory and cold winds whistling through the branches of trees that are almost barren, is what now fills our nights. There is that unmistakable snap in the air that lets us know Old Man Winter is lurking around the corner. Yet, despite the blanket of dry leaves that crunch under our feet as we walk, there is a festive feel in many neighborhoods as people get ready for Halloween.
